Textile Technology
I was thinking how many Malaysian are still wondering what does Textile Technology's students do. What is Textile and so on. Actually, I am one of the Textile students in Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam. As for your information, UiTM is the one and only university that offer this course ad it is under the faculty of Applied Sciences. Most of other universities out there in Malaysia are offering Textile courses under the Art and Design faculty which is not the same. They maybe study focusing on certain scope related to textile such as printing, weaving, designing and sewing.
Based on my experiences, when it comes to textile scope which is bigger than only printing, weaving, knitting and designing, most people started to wonder what exactly we do. So lets make it clear, friends!
Basically, you can find a lot of textile around you. In the morning, you woke up from your bed which is from textile product, your blanket, pillows that are covered with textile. To make it comfort, they are filled with fibres that are made from textile. Besides, you step down from bed and your feet slide into your house slippers and it is also made from textile. Then, you took your towel which is also textile and went into the bathroom brushing your teeth by using toothbrush and the bristle also is made from textile. After that, if you are a woman like me, you will use a facial cotton to apply toner on your face and using a very soft brushes to put on your makeup. You were stepping into carpet or mat that are placed in your house, and open the curtain to allow sunlight passes through your windows. Do you realize that mat, carpet and curtain are also textile? Moreover, you stepped into car and found that most of the things like door panel, carpet, tire cords, seats, seatbelt, airbags are all made from technical textile.
There are many examples of product related to textiles such as pampers, military uniforms, ballistic (bulletproof), protection uniform (fire and stab resistance), geo-textile, medical textile, smart textile, agro-textile, automotive textile and much more. There are like, A LOT ! **brain freezing.
Textile is not only cover soft product but it also cover hard product! Perhaps it will give you an eye opening after you read this entry.
So, we as a textile student need to cover all of this in our subjects. Not only that, we study on how yarns are made. Yarns are made from fibres through spinning process. Then how does it works and the machines. Also, we study the fibres type which is from natural to man made fibre. Then we study weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, CAD system, quality control, designing, sewing, merchandising, carpets, non woven, textile costing and much..muchh...much more i can't breath anymore. LOL. The hardest textile subject for me is costing. Well, I manage to get B in costing which is Alhamdulillah a lot.
Textile students are focusing on industry which means textile manufacturing. How to handle machines, process of know how, process on making from A-Z textile. So this is what we learn in our courses besides taking the compulsory subjects by the university such as business, calculus, chemistry, physics and yadayada....
In conclusion, Textile Technology is a study that you need to involve in all of the Textile because it covers all. Then, if you want to pursue on master and PhD then you can narrow down your scope.
Perhaps this entry will help you to understand more on textile, I hope you enjoy.
